What a WHOIS lookup shows you
Every registered domain has a public record held by its registry: which registrar manages it, when it was first registered, when it was last updated, when it expires, and its current status codes (for example whether a transfer lock is active). This tool queries that record directly through RDAP, the structured successor to classic WHOIS, and falls back to raw WHOIS text for the smaller number of registries that don't support RDAP yet, parsing the same fields out of the free-text response.

RDAP and WHOIS: where the data comes from
RDAP is the structured, JSON successor to the classic free-text WHOIS protocol. This tool queries RDAP first for clean, reliable data, and falls back to raw WHOIS on port 43 for the smaller number of registries that don't support RDAP yet, so you get the same registrar, dates, and status either way.
The domain registration lifecycle
The expiration date in a WHOIS record is the one that costs you a domain if you miss it. Once a domain expires it enters a grace and redemption period, and is then released for anyone to register. Checking the expiry date, and tracking it, is how you keep a domain you care about from slipping away.
